The U.S. State Department issued a worldwide cautionary alert late last week for any Americans traveling outside of the country.

In the alert, issued May 17, the department warned U.S. citizens traveling overseas to “exercise increased caution,” due to the possibility of “terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.”

In particular, the department said it “is aware of the increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against LGBTQI+ persons and events and advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution.”

Travelers in foreign countries are advised to stay alert in tourist-heavy locations, “including Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons.”

The State Department also encourages travelers to enroll in its Smart Traveler Enrollment program, which gives out travel information and alerts, and can make it easier for you to be located in the event of an emergency.

It also recommends following the department on Facebook and X for the latest updates.
